چکیده

Abstract This paper compares a differential wheelspeed based dead reckoning system to a gyro based system for land navigation. Test results show that the gyro and wheelspeed-heading schemes perform equally well when modeling assumptions hold, such as when navigating smooth road surfaces. However, the wheelspeed-heading estimator’s position errors grow about twice as fast as the gyro based system’s when navigating speed bumps and uneven road surfaces. In contrast to statements made in the literature, increasing the resolution of the stock wheelspeed sensors by an order of magnitude does not increase the positioning accuracy of either estimator and longitudinal slip of the vehicle tires does not appear to be a dominant error source. Ultimately, the limiting factor for dead reckoning performance appears to be road surface unevenness.

Land-Vehicle Navigation Using GPS - Proceedings of the IEEE

The Global Positioning System (GPS) has made navigation systems practical for a number of land-vehicle navigation applications. Today, GPS-based navigation systems can be found in motor vehicles, farming and mining equipment, and a variety of other land-based vehicles (e.g., golf carts and mobile robots). In Section II of this paper, each of these applications is discussed, and the reader is in...

GPS Aided Retrotraverse For Unmanned Ground Vehicles

A computer controlled HMMWV automatically retraces a previously recorded path using navigation data, a process we have termed retrotraverse. A Kalman filter combines the output of two navigation systems, an inertial dead reckoning system and a differential GPS, both with and without carrier phase detection. During retrotraverse, the mobility controller uses a velocity controller and pure pursui...

Internal correction of dead-reckoning errors with the smart encoder trailer

This paper presents an innovative method for accurate mobile robot dead-reckoning, called Internal Posi tion Error Correction (IPEC). In previous work, the IPEC method was successfully implemented on a specially designed mobile robot with two differential drive axles, called the Multi-Degree-of-Freedom (MDOF) mobile robot. Experimental results with the MDOF robot showed consistently one to two ...

Accurate odometry and error modelling for a mobile robot

This paper presents the key steps involved in the design, calibration and error modelling of a low cost odometry system capable of achieving high accuracy dead-reckoning. A consistent error model for estimating position and orientation errors has been developed. Previous work on propagating odometry error covariance relies on incrementally updating the covariance matrix in small time steps. The...

On Line Compensation of Heading Sensor Bias for Low Cost AUVs

This paper presents a study of the effects of compass bias on navigational accuracy of autonomous underwater vehicles. Low cost vehicle systems utilize a magnetometer, and Doppler sonar for dead reckoning, and a DGPS fix when surfaced. By learning the compass bias from a few DGPS fixes, the navigational errors can be bounded with only a small number of fixes. The study is conducted using the Fl...
